Another season of shenanigans…

More views of the shenanigans going on around the city…

A rather dramatic Larry Sprinkle auctions off FOX Morning Rising’s Anna Kooiman at Uptown Magazine’s Sexy Auction at HOM to raise funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

As you can see, this breaker is breaking it down. The QC Bounce Squad lead by Tom Hill performs at K.I.S.S Lounge during intermission for LA East’s Fashion Friday. (more…)

The town of Ayrsley

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Ayrsley is a Neo Traditional community (much like Birkdale Village) in South Charlotte with residential, retail and restaurant space. And there’s the wild Wild Wings, and the newest edition to South Charlotte nightlife — Red Lion Restaurant and Tavern.

Red Lion has such the ambiance of an old English pub that it reminded me of something straight out of London. And they have a menu to match: Crispy brie, fish and chips, bangers and mash… all they were missing was some Spotted Dick on the dessert menu — (who remembers the movie King Ralph?) (more…)

Live Review: Pat Green

Pat Green w/ Wade Bowen
Amos’ Southend
Nov. 15, 2008

The Deal — Texas singer and songwriter Pat Green made another trip up to Charlotte — this time to serenade from the stage of Amos’ SouthEnd.

The Good — In my opinion — all of Pat Green’s songs. That, and the fact one of his many sisters shares a zip code with us, hence the reason you can often find Pat Green on some stage in Charlotte or a surrounding area. (more…)

Free VIP pass and drinks tonight for Turkey Fest!

Monday, November 17th, 2008

I am giving away 2 V.I.P. vouchers for Turkey Fest TONIGHT that will not only grant you V.I.P. admittance, but six free cocktails. HOLLA!

The drunken fest, I mean Turkey Fest, is tonight on 5th Street’s own trifecta — the Attic, Madison’s and Connelly’s.

Although it might be a drunken fest for me as I have to judge the bartender’s competition at Connelly’s along with Carolina Panther Gary Gibson, Brotha’ Fred and my partner in “paid to party” crime, Sarah Aarthun.

Turkey Fest will also feature a “Rock Band” competition at The Attic, makeovers at Madison’s courtesy of the Aveda Institute and MAC.

All of the proceeds from the event go to the Second Harvest Food Bank and the cover charge is merely a canned food item.

Good times for a good cause!

The first person to e-mail me at brittney.cason@creativeloafing.com and tell me which “So You Think You Can Dance” star I want to pinch, wins! Don’t worry, I didn’t actually pinch her.

Happy Anniversary Dixie’s Tavern!

Monday, November 17th, 2008

This past weekend, Dixie’s turned 10 – making it one of the oldest bars in Charlotte, and still one of the most popular.

So how has Dixie’s survived and thrived all these years? Hmmmm… cue to me scratching my head. Apparently, that helps to turn the light bulb on because I have a few ideas as to why…

The Music — When I’m at Dixie’s I’m not just dancing to the beat of my own drum — nor am I ever the only one dancing. At their anniversary party, I found myself doing the twist — to the actual old school song the dance was derived from, boot scooting and boogying to Kid Rock’s “All Summer Long,” hip-hopping til I almost dropped to Rhiana and T.I, head-banging to Aerosmith, jumping up and down to O.A.R and I even had a Michael Jackson dance off with some random dude I am pretty sure I looked equally as ridiculous as. I was so amp’ed up with severe dancing ADD (as in I couldn’t carry a conversation longer than a song because another good one would come on and I’d want to start dancing) that my friend told me I had the attention span of a ferret on Crystal Meth.

In other words, it was the best playlist… ever, thanks to DJ Jazzy Jimmy. I would pay him to make me a mix tape.

Bob Durkin — That man is like Midas the Myth god — everything he touches turns to gold. When I gave him a Happy Anniversary high-five, I was weary of turning into a golden statue that would end up as decoration in one of his bars in the EpiCentre trifecta. (more…)

Is Charlotte more fun on weekdays, or is it just me?

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

I had the most fun the past two nights on random Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

I started my night off at Bank of America Stadium for the Panther’s Taste of the NFL, followed by opening night of “Chicago” (in Charlotte), as well as the Cast After-Party at Feast… and, by cast, I mean the cast of “Chicago” AND “So You Think You Can Dance.”

And All That Jazz… (more…)

What happens in Vegas…gets put in this blog

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

I went to Vegas this past weekend and managed to not come back married or broke. They don’t call it Sin City for nothing — there is something about that over-the-top town that sheds inhibitions, breaks everyone’s own rules and brings out the wild child in even the most boring of people.

Perhaps it has something to do with the fact alcohol is free while you gamble and even prostitution is legal. They say New York City is the city that never sleeps, but I’d like to dispute that - Vegas is actually the city that never sleeps. I didn’t do much sleeping either. Granted, I rarely ever sleep… I figure I can sleep when I’m dead.

The first night we went to TAO (at the Venetian hotel) for “religious” nightlife (if there is such a thing).

TAO had naked girls swimming in rose petal filled bath tubs, nine Umpa Lumpas and the entire cast of costumed Sesame Street characters (only in Vegas). When Elmo and the gang got on stage to the tune of the Sesame Street theme song, the entire club stopped dancing to watch and sing “sunny days, sweeping the clouds away…..”

At 4 a.m. I found myself saying “It’s 7 a.m. in my real life.” (more…)

Pirate Pics

If you read my most recent column in CL: Waving your Freak Flag Proudly at Snug Harbor’s Shiprocked, then you know about the pirate ship of Plaza-Midwood — Snug Harbor and its Thursday Shiprocked. Well, since it’s one of those, “you have to see it” kind of events, I have provided the visuals to go with my column.

Where were you when history was made?

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Where were you when history was made last night? … I was at the Generation Engage “Best Damn Election Party” at ALIVE in NoDa where MSNBC national news was reporting live.

The party had drinks for the different parties: Republican and Democrat. The Democratic cocktail consisted of Rum, Blue Curacao and Triple Sec (blue) while the Republican included Rum, Pineapple and Cranberry juice (red).

Let’s just say I saw more blue drinks than red at this party. It seems as if all of America went from Red, White and Blue to just Red vs. Blue.

This election was like the American Olympics; the entire country got into it like they do with NFL play-offs. As the votes were tabulated state to state, electoral to popular, I found myself looking towards the television asking, “What’s the score?” (more…)

Old Kids on the Block

Friday, October 31st, 2008

The first concert I ever went to in my life was New Kids on the Block and Tiffany. For my ninth birthday my mom got me front-row tickets and a Joey McIntyre t-shirt — that I of course wore to the concert. But all I really remember is the older, teenager sitting next to me that fainted on me because Donnie made eye contact with her. 17 years later, I found myself attending a NKOTB concert … and girls are still fainting.

I went to their concert last night at Time Warner Cable Arena to be nostalgic, but quickly learned that’s hard to do when you don’t remember most of the songs. I felt like my row was the only ones that didn’t know the lyrics. The arena was packed from the floor to the upper level with women my age or older wearing buttons, t-shirts that read “Property of Donnie,” holding posters and singing along. And I thought I was obsessed! I grew out of my Joey shirt, replaced my posters with Jewel ones, and retired my twin NKOTB bed set that I had on my bunk bed.

I couldn’t help but wonder — Where did all these New Kids on the Block fans come from?
There were so many girls there, the men’s restrooms were converted into lady’s rooms. (more…)
